F Grade Policy

Should this policy print in the student catalog?
Does this proposal impact programs within the professional education unit (CPE)?
Upon a majority vote by the faculty of the Department of Counselor Education (9 in support with 1 abstention) , it is our desire to maintain the previous F grade policy for students in our program. The rationale for this change is as follows: (1) when WCU chose to change the F Grade Policy, the option was provided for departments to "opt out" of the new policy and continue to follow the old policy, by requesting to do so through the CAPC process. (2) It is not always appropriate to allow students in counselor education programs the opportunity to remediate F grades, (e.g., but is not limited to, instances when an F grade is earned via a breach of ethical codes, professional misconduct, professional impairment, gross incompetence, and/or endangering the welfare of clients). In such cases, remediation is not warranted, and in fact, may act as a breach of professional ethics in the faculty's role as gatekeepers to the profession. Students for whom remediation is appropriate may still petition for exception to the proposed policy.

Kenneth Witmer (kwitmer) (Tue, 05 Apr 2016 18:20:33 GMT): Rollback: Eric Can you provide additional reasoning for the desire to not align with Graduate School policy. Why do we not want CEE candidates to ever earn an F grade?
Kenneth Witmer (kwitmer) (Tue, 05 Apr 2016 20:49:59 GMT): Rollback: Matt I believe we need a statement explaining why we think the CEE programs should not allow someone to continue with a "F" If this contested, I have to have some rational cause for the exception.
Matthew Snyder (msnyder) (Mon, 11 Apr 2016 18:17:15 GMT): Rollback: here you go
Carol Smith (csmith3) (Mon, 18 Apr 2016 15:01:52 GMT): This proposal is being Approved prior to CPE review, for the purpose of moving it through the CIM workflow and allowing simultaneous review by CPE and CAPC. The proposal will be considered at the next CPE meeting on April 22, 2016.
