Immersion study and/or internship work experience is an essential component of the B.A.L.C. curriculum. Languages and cultures are inextricably entwined.The goal of the immersion experience, which is a requirement of graduation, is to enable students to apply linguistic and cultural knowledge in an authentic social context, and for them to experience the challenges and the gratification of living in another culture.3-12

The number of hours available depends on the student's level of second language proficiency. The student may choose to apply some of these to additional advanced courses in the major area or to continue second or third language study.

For French, German, and Spanish majors; FRE 101, GER 101, and SPA 101 - SPA 201 may only fulfill general education student elective requirements, and /or overall graduation credits. These courses will not fulfill their respective major requirements.

Accelerated B.A. in Languages and Cultures - German Concentration to M.A. in Languages and Cultures - German Concentration Program

B.A. in Languages and Cultures majors are required to take 30 credits of major requirements in their concentration language. Students with junior standing and a 3.0 cumulative GPA (or higher) may apply to the Accelerated Program wherein they can fulfill up to 12 credits of their undergraduate major courses with 500-level graduate courses in their concentration language. In the Accelerated Program, these 12 credits count toward completion of the B.A. program and go toward the completion of the M.A. degree in Languages and Cultures. Accelerated Program students can subsequently be accepted into the M.A. program in Languages and Cultures following conferral of the undergraduate degree.

Up to 12 credits of undergraduate Major courses in the target language may be substituted by any graduate 500-level courses in the target language: these courses would count both for the B.A. Major requirements and towards the M.A. in Languages and Cultures. Specifically, up to four 500-level courses taken as an undergraduate student will count towards the six Target-Language Courses required for the M.A. degree in Languages and Cultures.
